A team of Japanese researchers reported on a mysterious bacteria (Ideonella sakaiensis) that can “eat plastic”. The bacterium is able to attach to the surface of PET, secrete a new type of PET hydrolase to break the PET down into small pieces, and then transport the degraded products into the body for further "digestion", and ultimately into ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid, two relatively simple organic compounds.
